Until he joined ESEI, Pierre Guimond worked as minister-counsellor and head of the foreign policy service at the Canadian embassy in Paris. He began his career in 1979 with Québec’s Ministère des Affaires intergouvernementales and joined the Canadian Foreign Service in 1987. He served in Prague, Bonn, and Vienna and was Canada’s ambassador to Budapest from 2007 to 2010.

At headquarters, he served as a desk officer in the Political and Strategic Analysis Division and the USSR and Central and Eastern Europe Division. He was deputy director of the European Union Division, and senior ministerial assistant to Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham. Successively director for the European Union, Eastern Europe and the Balkans, and Policy Planning, Pierre Guimond has also served as an advisor to the Foreign and Defence Policy Secretariat of the Privy Council Office.
