What happens after I apply?

First, your application is reviewed by the Registrar’s Office at Université Laval.

Immediately after you submit your application, the Registrar’s Office will send you an initial follow-up email confirming that your payment (application fee) and admission application have been received.

This email will provide a link to track the status of your application on myPortal. This is also where you can check if any documents are missing for your application to be considered or if any action is required on your part.

If your application is eligible, your application will be sent to us, and our team will then correspond with you.

  1. Your application will be carefully examined. Meeting minimum eligibility conditions does not ensure automatic admission to our programs. Our programs have limited capacity.
  2. Our team may ask you to provide additional documentation. Make sure you do so as soon as possible so as not to delay examination of your application.
  3. If your application is accepted, you will receive a message from the Registrar’s Office and a message from our team informing you of this and inviting you to indicate in myPortal that you accept our offer. If we do not accept your application, our decision will be posted on myPortal.

Non-Canadian applicants: the Registrar’s Office will send you an electronic offer of admission. You can use it to apply for your Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) and your Study Permit. You will need both these documents to study at our university.

In the third step, you will have to respond to the offer of admission.

  1. If you’ve received an offer of admission to one of our programs, you will need to respond in myPortal.
  2. If you accept our offer, you will receive a welcome email from Université Laval. In this message, you will receive your Université Laval username (IDUL-unique identifier) as well as your institutional email address (first name.lastname.1@ulaval.ca).
  3. NOTE: from this point on, all messages will be sent to your institutional address.
  4. Once your offer has been accepted, it’s time to register for the program’s courses in myPortal. Our colleagues will help you do this. If necessary, you can contact them at programmes.esei@ulaval.ca.
  5. This email also explains how to track the progress of your application in myPortal.

Selection criteria

All applications are evaluated by the program director. The Admissions Committee selects a wide range of applicants in keeping with the multidisciplinary nature of our programs.

  • Writing, analysis, and research skills
  • Relevant experience, e.g. professional and/or extracurricular activities
  • General knowledge and the overall quality of the application

Other criteria, specific to the Ph.D. in International Studies

  • Aptitude for research
  • The quality and relevance of the proposed research and the likelihood that you will fit into one of the ESEI research groups
